Las Cuevas de Ajanta se encuentran en el distrito de Aurangabad (India). La ciudad importante más cercana es Jalna a unos 75 km de distancia. Fueron descubiertas en 1819 por soldados británicos durante una partida de caza.
Se trata de 32 grutas naturales, talladas en las colinas hace miles de años por gentes que apenas utilizaban martillos y cinceles.
En la época de su descubrimiento, las pinturas tenían un buen estado de conservación pero luego se han ido degradando a causa de los efectos del turismo masivo, como ocurre ahora en nuestro país con las Cuevas de Altamira, que después de ocho años cerradas al público, volvieron a abrirse con restricciones en el verano de 2010.
La mayoría de las pinturas tienen más de 1500 años. La más antigua de las cuevas se remonta al siglo II antes de Cristo. Algunas de ellas son Viharas o monasterios, grandes cámaras con habitaciones pequeñas que conducían fuera de la sala principal y era donde vivían los monjes.
Estos templos fueron tallados muchos siglos antes de las catedrales cristianas, que adoptan formas similares. Algunos especulan sobre el motivo de inspiración que pudieran tener para los arquitectos de la Edad Media.
